The plot of Preminger’s masterpiece twists and turns around the seductive influence that Laura (Gene Tierney) exerts both alive and dead over two men: Waldo Lydecker and detective Mark McPherson (Dana Andrews). Laura Hunt, a glamorous and beautiful advertising executive, is found brutally murdered in her apartment, her face blown away by a shotgun. Detective McPherson is assigned to the case and questions in turn the various suspects: her possessive friend and mentor Waldo Lydecker, her jealous aunt Ann Treadwell (Judith Anderson) and her playboy fiancé Shelby Carpenter (Vincent Price). As the mystery deepens. McPherson finds himself becoming increasingly obsessed with Laura, gradually falling in love with her image - a beautiful portrait hanging above her fireplace.
